It's Not About the Gold, It's About the Water: OXFAM America on Mining in El Salvador

Pacific Rim, a Canadian-based mining company, is setting up a subsidiary corporation in the United States with the intent to sue the government of El Salvador for $200 million, or 1% of El Salvador's GDP, for violating the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Concurrently, the government of El Salvador is looking to make a law banning mining operations as it poses a threat to their water supply and has little effect on their economy.

The Art Institute of Chicago just purchased Chicago-based photographer Dawoud Bey's series Harlem, USA, a series of portraits of residents of NYC's historic neighborhood that Bey took in the 1970s as he started his career. WBEZ's Alison Cuddy walked through the collection with him at the Modern Wing and shared some of their conversation about the stories behind the photos.
