Tonight we will be playing all 12 DJ sets (twice) from the "Quest for the Best" DJ (Prelim) Recorded live at Simone's. Starting at 8pm & again at 11pm. (The night was hosted by Luis Perez & Dirty M.F.) DJ Pumpin Pete & myself will be talking about the competition & the finals coming up this Wednesday 2/22 at the Shrine. JDLP

This Saturday (2/18), Vocalo will make it's debut on WBEZ 91.5 FM! You all know what we do and how we do it. Now we're going to represent on the big station with our own unique mix of music, stories, and conversations. "Vocalo on WBEZ" will be hosted by Jesse Menendez, and will be produced in collaboration with #teamvocalo (Molly, Brian, Shantell, Luis, Sarah, Nick, Fyodor, Jesse De La Peña ), and, well, you. Yes, you! That's right, our fans and listeners largely inspire the stories that we feature, and this won't be any different. So get ready because Vocalo is taking over the airwaves every Saturday from 8-10pm.

Here's what the team has on deck this Saturday (2/18):

Luis' conversation with Dr. Jesus "Chuy" Negrete, Chicano Musicologist and Founder and Director of the Mexican Cultural Institute, on the role of music in preserving history.

Jesse's interview with Hip-Hop artist Add-2 about his new single "Modern Day Coons" and the role of hip hop in social commentary.

Brian and Molly's chat with feminist rock star Jaclyn Friedman about her book What You Really Really Want: The Smart Girl’s Shame-Free Guide to Sex & Safety.

Luis and Shantell's "real talk" discussion with Ameena Matthews, activist and star of the documentary film The Interrupters.

And a Reggae inspired DJ set from Vocalo's DJ Collective member (& KCRW DJ) Jeremy Sole.

The $400,000 Demerit: A Charter School Under Fire For Its Disciplinary Fine System

Molly and Brian spoke with resident Wonder Woman Dr. Coya Paz, Pritzker Fellow LaCreshia Birts, and Superintendent Michael Milkie about how Noble Street Charter School has taken heat from parents this week for gathering over $400,000 in student disciplinary fines in the past two years. That number is an accumulation of the $5 fines student pay for each offense to offset the costs of disciplinary programs that they must attend after they accrue 12 detentions.

Here's the question: Is this strict discipline to help kids get in line, or a prejudicial measure that's keeping kids with the highest need out of our charter schools? Let's see if we can answer it.

The Tribune's Neil Steinberg recently wrote about the sad number of qualified SANE nurses in Illinois hospitals. SANE nurses are those trained to examine and collect evidence from rape victims. Both Sarah Leyden and Sharmili Majmudar, the Director for Advocacy Services and and Executive Director of Rape Victim Advocates joined us in studio this Feminist Wednesday to talk about the growing program and the Violence Against Women Act, a bill that's renewal has stalled in the Senate. The first clip follows our discussion of the SANE program and the second clip follows our discussion of the legislation.

Wednesday February 8th 2012 Vocalo's DJ Collective presents the "Quest for the Best" 2012 DJ Competition (Preliminary) at Simone's 960 w. 18th St. (Pilsen) Chicago.

The Collective are holding a competition to see who has what it takes to be the next member.

Send all 15 min. demos to (jessed@vocalo.org) NEW DEADLINE: Monday, January 30th 2012 (5pm)

Winner will be a featured member of our DJ Collective heard on Vocalo's "Friday Night DJ Series".

DJs are to submit a 15 min. mix to (jessed@vocalo.org) by
NEW DEADLINE Monday. Jan. 30th 2012 (5pm). Selected DJs will be contacted Weds Feb. 1st & given further details if they make the cut. The top 12 DJs will be chosen to compete for this slot.

(Do not submit a mix that you can't reproduce live).

DJs will be judged on:

Track selection
Creativity
Versatility
Technical skill

(Not scratching or rock doubles will NOT count against you but if you attempt to and are not good.. this WILL work against your score.. ("If you can't scratch, don't")

The top 6 will move on to the finals

* 15 minutes each round (submission, prelim, and finals)

* Keep it interesting (multiple styles of music, different tempos)

* Tell us a story through your mix (act like this mix is what you want to present to the world as YOU, yourself as a DJ)

* Don't feel like you're in a club (the LAST thing any of us want is to hear a ton of top 40/club mixes).

When it comes music there shouldn’t be any rules… but playing a bunch of top 40 tunes and not doing something different with them will work against your score.

* Must use either Turntables or CDJs (No Laptops by themselves, Ableton Live or iPods). Must be able to spin the old fashion way.. no auto sync button.

* Keep it clean (obviously)

Ron Paul is poised to win an upset in Iowa over eventual nominee Mitt Romney, despite rising scrutiny over racist content in a newsletter he published decades ago. They ask the Lenny, the self-proclaimed hip-hop republican, what he thinks about Ron and the other candidates as well as today's Grand Old Party.

It's that time of year, ladies! It's Halloween and the question is not only to sexy or not to sexy, but also... why? Stephanie Mansour doesn't have a problem with sexy costumes for Halloween, it's just that she feels women don't have a choice about being sexy or not. We also got a phone call from Robert Hines that really stirred Steph up, but then Ryan from Westville called to create a compromise.

You know, the stuff you see in galleries and pay millions for. Artist Ray Noland will join us to talk about his own process in making art for both the streets and the walls.
