All through November, we're talking about home on Vocalo.org: From home improvement, to homelessness, food and family, trying to leave, trying to stay.
And you're our next star reporter. Your telephone is your microphone. We've got questions for you to ask. Here's your assignment:
- Sign up for a profile (which maybe you've already done).
- Edit your profile, to add your cell phone number.
- Find somebody you'd like to interview-- really anybody you're curious about: your dad, your teacher, your new co-worker, that cute guy at the bus stop...
- Say, "Hey, can I interview you for a radio show about home?"
- When they say yes, call 1-888-635-1112. Press "2" and wait for the beep. OK, your mic is now live.
- Why not turn the phone upside-down, so you can move the microphone closer to your subject?
- Start asking questions! Check 'em out:
Week 1: Home Base. Where do you feel most at home?
- Describe the place: Where is it? What does it look like? Smell like? Sound like?
- What’s your first memory of it?
- Who else (if anyone) do you share it with?
- What makes it home for you?
Week 2: Home cooking: What’s the food that means “home cooking” to you?
- Describe it—what does it look like, smell like, taste like, feel like in your mouth?
- Who makes it?
- When do you eat it?
- Where? (Tell me more about that place...)
- Who else is there when you eat it?
- What makes it so special?
- What’s your earliest memory of it?
Week 3: Departures. Tell me about a time when you left home.
- Why did you leave?
- Where did you go?
- What did you hope it would be like?
- What were you worried about?
- What did it turn out to be like?
- Did you ever go back to your old place? (And if so, why? And how? And what was it like when you did? And how long did you stay?)
Week 4: Separations. Have you ever “cut off” a family member? Or had someone cut you off? (Or: Has there been a rift in your family where people stopped talking to each other?)
- What was the conflict about?
- How did the break happen?
- What’s happened since then? How has it affected you?
- If there’s been reconciliation, how did that happen? (Who made the first move? What happened next? ….)
Alternate Week 4. Where the heart is. Tell me about someone who makes you really feel at home.
- How do you know them?
- Describe them: What do they look like? How do they dress? What does their voice sound like?
- What do they do that makes you feel easy with them?
- Where do they live? What’s the place like? Who do they live with?
- What’s their life like? How do they spend their days?
- What makes them happy?
- Tell me about the first time you remember seeing them. … and the last time you remember seeing them.
