The Rundown
It's Fashion Week, and Vocalero leespeaks takes a stand on "mandals." He says they must be stopped. Are you drinking the Kool-Aid on this one?
We'll get a reality check from Victor Pitre, a partner in Leaders 1354, a South Side sneaker/streetwear emporium, and with Sylvia Rocha, owner of Zapatillas, a fashion-forward shoe store in Pilsen.
Also: 30 years ago, more than 900 people died, literally, from drinking the Kool-Aid in Jonestown, a settlement in Guyana-- they had followed Jim Jones, a charismatic preacher. It was the horrific end of a story that had started in the 1950s as an early attempt at creating an integrated church. A theater company in Chicago is running a play based on interviews with survivors of the Jonestown massacre, and the company's director comes to Vocalo.org today.
Oh, yeah: He lived in Juneau, Alaska through most of 2007, so he might share some impressions of a certain vice-presidential candidate.
