Matthew Eric Wrinkles is scheduled to die just after midnight in Michigan City. Convicted of killing his ex-wife, her brother and her brother’s wife, Wrinkles will be the first person executed in Indiana since 2007.
Dale Melczek, Roman Catholic Bishop of Gary, talks to Vocalo the day before Wrinkles' scheduled execution. An opponent of the death penalty, Melczek met several times with Wrinkles while in prison.
A moratorium on executions remains in place in Illinois. Public opinion still falls on both sides of the issue, Rasmussen Reports, often quoted by conservative media outlets, polled voters in wake of the Foot Hood shootings and found 73 percent of Texas voters favored imposing the death penalty in that case.
Meanwhile, WBEZ's Michael Puente talked with protestors planning a vigil outside the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City.
Here’s the challenge, as the hours tick down for Matthew Eric Wrinkles: give Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels your advice on what factors he should weigh when deciding whether to become involved in Wrinkles’ case.
Two more opposing viewpoints:
1. Wrinkles himself reportedly declined to ask Gov. Daniels for clemency.
2. This man from Humboldt Park tells Vocalo that he thinks the death penalty is too hard on offenders' families: "My cousin on death row."
