Can you equate the GLBT movement to the Civil Rights movement? Why or why not?
sarah.e.lu:
no, you can't equate them. while LGBTQ rights are civil rights, the movement is different than THE civil rights movement. i think it's messed up when people say it's the same to lend the LGBTQ movement legitimacy. it's like appropriating the struggles of POC. not cool. especially when the mainstream LGBTQ movement has its own problems with racism. so in short: i think equating them is really messed up.
sarah.e.lu:
they are related, i'm cool with that comparison. but saying they are the same is problematic.
Claudine:
NO! They are not the same and as a Black women I dare them compare the struggles Blacks (who built what we know as AMERICA) ENDURED in the Civil Rights Movement, to the struggle for Gay Rights. It is pathetic and they need to come up with another approach to getting the rights they seek and stop trying to capitalize on African American struggle.
