Miguel Pinero was a successful and critically acclaimed poet, screenwriter and an award-winning playwright. He was also a thief, convict, drug addict, a junkie, and at times, homeless. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in the ghettos of New York’s Lower Eastside, Pinero’s works reflect the harsh reality in which he lived. For some, his writings are nothing more than a glorification of drugs, violence, and all things street. For others, he was a misunderstood chronicler of ghetto life; a voice for the hopeless and the hopeful. And though he loved the streets and the hustle, he was conscious of their harmful effects on his life and on those who shared a similar lifestyle. His poem, “Seekin’ The Cause” represents the kind of writing that can best be described as an indicment on all faucets of society, both the rich and poor, for misguided intentions.
