Maybe they were misunderstanding figure-head status with fame and celebrity. Another possibility is that they took flashing money and hanging out with rappers as signs of overcoming the system, as a lot of folk do. I'm not making excuses here, just trying to drum up a little empathy. After all, these were high school aged kids.
