The sign says "Welcome to Illinois" The toll booth says "Pay up" After a time, you near it And like many beasts you smell it before you see it This beast does not pounce upon you It creeps and it surrounds It becons with with feelings and sights and sounds All roads lead to this beast, And before you know it, you are in it. Built on the backs of a dozen generations For the profit of but a few Many have, and have yet to die feeding the beast, and making it grow It swallows souls and shits out product Every day it inhales a million people Each night it exhales just a bit less It bites with its heaven high teeth And injects the poison of over-stimulation Its arteries bear the names of dead presidents its veins fill weekly with trash its orifice is a mighty river that once flowed both ways its eyes are blue, with copper flecks, they are many and mean and dont give a damn It was once burnt quite badly but flames could not destroy they merely charred the seeds husk and allowed it to germinate This beast never sleeps Its song burns the air like aural napalm Its sub-base vibe jarrs ones spine It allways has something for you to do Many say they wish to excape to lacerate this leviathans bloated stomach they only succeed to inch away and inject the city every day This beast is the city The city they call Chi It swallows people up And eats them alive Ive been gone so long, and wish to return Shaking from the DT's, I need my shot in the arm Once a month is not enough Once a week just wont do I wish to swim in the syringe And drown in the venom of the beast
I wrote this while on a three year estrangement from our fair city.
