Very interesting indeed, IMO I think no form or genre is dead only redistributed and modified in order to create an ever growing Genre base. Right now on my web site or even here on this web site under the Jamacast Collective is evidence as to what is and can happen with a wide versatile Genre type of Music. I discovered even back in the 70's forms of what is now considered a punk style of music, take a look at some of the music the Doors have done and the way he uses some of his gut wrenching vocals and compare that influence to some of the more modern day scenes of music as well as even just a decade ago or so. Every type of music is discerned a little different by everyone to some degree. you can even discern some Rap style with some old Nursery rhymes of course you may have to completely take the lyrics out and dirty them up a bit and x on a cop or two. Music is so mashed up and Mashable to date that it leaves a real challenge to come up with something completely unique sounding. We all get so used to a certain sound of the day or time period that our minds get trapped into a record groove so to speak. Example of that is with the current popular American Idol scene. Here we have 3 Judges who are actually very experienced in discerning the technical prowess and pop scene that the Groove they are in would actually render artist of the likes of Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan,The Boss,Prince, My man Jimi, AC DC, Nirvana completely useless losers. I mean if your voice doesn't sound like Aretha Franklin or some current Pop Star you haven't a chance to win. Imagine the world of music without some of these greats and there are many more. It's really not about Genre it's about sounding unique or different and musically challenging to the brain. This is all my opinion of course.
