Can someone give us a ring tonight (or make an addition here now) to set me straight on something: How does the Democratic Party pick its nominee anyway?
The Sun-Times this morning says Barack and Hillary each have about 1,000 delegates, and there are about 1,000 delegates left to be chosen-- so about 3,000 total-- but that about 2,000 are needed to clinch the nomination.
So does the winner need a 2/3 majority? And if those numbers are right, doesn't that mean it's basically impossible for either of them to get to 2,000 unless the rest of the primaries are basically a shutout for one of them?
We'll be on the air from 4 to 10, so call anytime at 312-893-2993, or make an addition here to help me out.
Meanwhile, here's the part of the Sun-Times story that got me all confused:
"According to an AP tally -- the numbers from the campaigns vary -- Obama has 1,178 delegates to 1,024 for Clinton. It takes 2,025 to clinch, and some 1,024 delegates remain up in the air."
