Memo puts WGN news staffer at loss for words (3-10-2010) Feder blogs

Who says no one pays attention to those silly blogs ?

I mentioned the Robert Feder blog, when he started posting it, to a public relations person who advised me that “no one except a few insiders read that blog.”  At the time I was guessing how many people looked at this column.   I vastly underestimated.

Mr. Feder, longtime Chicago media columnist, printed a leaked memo by Tribune CEO Randy Michaels that mentioned 119 words and phrases that must not be uttered by WGN radio and television anchors and reporters - ever.

This spread everywhere and created a nationwide debate about overused, redundant and annoying phrases used by radio and TV.

The fast and furious stream of responses - exceeded 333.  Many responding were not even from Chicago and not even aware of the legend that is Mr. Feder. The list and commentary created a word of mouth and word of blog sensation - in so many unlikely places !

This started a wonderful, feisty and back and forth debate (comments) about the way the media uses clichés and compact “shorthand speak” during newscasts and print journalism.

ANYA # 267 - explained the created “Newspeak” so simply - and concisely:

“Cliches exist for a reason - radio and TV have set time limits - i.e. how much time you are given to convey information.

Many of the words on this list are words that convey an idea with one word instead of three. English is full of what are called “phrasal verbs” (take out, pick up etc) where you need more than one word to convey an idea.

Newspeak serves a practical purpose - convey more information in a shorter amount of time. If you think about the alternatives to some of these words, you come up with cumbersome colloquialisms that make it sound like you are dumbing down your speech.”

The humorous, perhaps inadvertently, part of the memo involved the use of “BINGO CARDS” (?) and the snitching, Nazi, Gestapo, McCarthy-like, Big Brother tactic of turning in your co-workers to management if they used the evil, forbidden words and phrases.

Is radio really dead ?

If this is true - lots of people are watching it die a long and winding dramatic death.
