Chicago Throwback Song of The Day: E.C. Illa - On Ill

By Gabriel Mendoza
on 3:50pm, Wednesday, May 23 2012

By: Gabriel Mendoza (@IamSquareOne)

The North Pole's Ill State Assassin, E.C. Illa was probably one of the first Chicago artists to begin receiving national exposure in the mid-1990's courtesy of his single, On Ill featured on the critically acclaimed and locally championed album, Illa EP. Now I recall first seeing this video on The Box (Music YOU control!) and sitting in awe at the raw footage (On Ill was directed by EC himself), the knocking drums, the boastful Chicago pride, everything was ill! The good folks over at Complex Magazine (is there anything they don't rank?) listed On Ill as the 33rd best Chicago Rap Song, not bad, but I feel it should be ranked higher (top 10 at least).  Check out today's Chicago throwback song of the day below.

Outting Celebrities: That's So NOT Raven

By Molly Adams
on 11:03am, Wednesday, May 23 2012

Recently, both Queen Latifah and Raven-Symone were "outted" by various media sources-- Raven-Symone for allegedly living with another woman, and Queen Latifah for headlining a gay pride parade in Long Beach, California, where she announced that she was "among her people." Molly and Kimbriell Kelly discussed what these claims are based on, whether we as fans and media consumers have a right to this kind of information, and just why it is we're so darn interested.

Too Masculine for Incense? Try Man-Candles!

By Molly Adams
on 10:43am, Monday, May 21 2012

At the behest of a caller, Brian and Molly rehashed the topic of Yankee Candle's new product: MAN CANDLES; candles manly enough for men to enjoy. Finally! Is the smell of a freshly sawed 2x4 really what every red-blooded man wants wafting through his house, though? And what, exactly, does the "Man Town" candle smell like?

By Molly Adams

Even before forming future rock group Outernational, in Brooklyn, NY, its members were community activists. So of course when the band was formed, revolutionary rock followed. Their new album Todos Somos Illegales (We Are All Illegal) is a sobering look into the harsh realities facing our undocumented immigrants. The band joined Jesse Menendez on The MusicVox to talk about their experiences visiting US borders in Arizona and Texas, protesting, meeting activists, and playing shows exposing social injustices and inspiring people to fight for social change.

You can catch the band tonight 5/17 in Chicago at Abbey Pub.

Thanks Vocalo

Its so refreshing to hear questions that are both poignant and insightful. This band is great! I've been listening to this station for just under a few months and I must say, you guys have great programming. The guests are great and the music show plays some great stuff.

It's Not About the Gold, It's About the Water: OXFAM America on Mining in El Salvador

By Molly Adams
on 1:32pm, Friday, May 18 2012

Pacific Rim, a Canadian-based mining company, is setting up a subsidiary corporation in the United States with the intent to sue the government of El Salvador for $200 million, or 1% of El Salvador's GDP, for violating the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Concurrently, the government of El Salvador is looking to make a law banning mining operations as it poses a threat to their water supply and has little effect on their economy. Sofia Vergara and Juliana Turqui of OXFAM America joined us in studio along with Rodolfo Calle, an El Salvadoran activist, to talk about the organizing they have done around the issue.
