The Language of Language is written, designed, read and produced by Elizabeth Eva Coleman © December 2010 . This is my capstone project from my bachelor's degree work at the University of Utah. I created this book out of my love for the intimate relationship forged between a physical book and the reader combine with my passion for rhetoric as well as audio production's ability to transcend emotional boundaries. The Language of Language is a book-arts project that takes a post-modern approach to literature and language with an online audio component and physical hypertext--kind of like a bizarre read-along, that takes you into a third realm of participation.

I was inspired to create this book during a digital/post-modern literature seminar at the U of U where we studied hypertexts, the evolution of the book and media specific analysis and rhetoric theory. I wanted to submerge the reader/listener deeply into my love of literature: isolation and printed text. I firmly control the listener's experience by determining how much time is spent with each page--at the end of the book, when the music is playing, the reader/listener has more time to revisit potions of the book she wishes to spend more time with. Intentionally, the text does not always match the spoken word.

Each time you hear the chime, "turn the page"--as in, scroll to the next page image. The book begins on the "instructions" page. For optimum submersion, wear headphones while listening to the audio.
