I remember so well the day I decided to take a stand on the issue of who would be elected Mayor within the city of Chicago Illinois. Yes I lived on the North side in the Gold coast for over 10 years moved there from Lincoln Park. It was in the 80's while I was working for one of the most largest Law Firms in the nation, I was happy as a lark, my mother was alive, and we both watched the television which had so many bias ads on then Alderman Harold Washington, who sought for the second time the seat of becoming Chicago's First Mayor. I watched in horror as the media allowed people to say anything and everything about Harold it went on and on and on non-stop! then one day as I left to go to work I saw Operation Push volunteers outside CBS Studios marching on the issue of racism in reporting. I was upset that no one took them as being the voice within the Black Community.
Then my mother said to me you got to do something! So I did, I went into Operation Push on Saturday during their forum, dressed in blue jeans and with a cap on and sat and listened. Rev. Riddick was on the Stage and he looked down at me and starting talking about woman in pants, I laughed to myself, but came up to him and told him I was Dan Burley's daughter, he welcomed me spoke to me about the concerns and then told me to pick any committee to get involved in Joe Gardner was involved in the Political Group with and there was the media coalition, and I said to myself that's the one and from there I launched a campaign to get Harold Washington Election while helping folks within the media to maintain their jobs.
Yes I did and was involved also within Cook County Chairman and President George Dunne's 42 ward committee, I was also working news election at the time as well and had contacts within the old friends of my father.
On the North side I took to the street talking to people getting involved in groups inviting people over to my apartment building located at McClurg Court and did everything I could to get Harold Washington the Liberal Lake Front vote, nope not one talks about this but I did, and at Operation Push I bought Carol Marine, Walter Jacobson and others there to forms. The forums get so big there was not enough space to get all the people inside, I created a stock purchase program and had also a Jones Cable License which I offered up to them in order for the community to have more and more media involvement.
In addition I saved many jobs for those within the mainstream media remember I was working in a very larger than life Law Firm .
During this time the people rouse up in massive and created a powerful political charge in Chicago something that was never to this day has not been felt. Because everyone came together and was sick of being robbed within outrageous taxes, condo condo condo and it was nothing like it is now because it's hundreds of times worse.
I am applauded at the wasteful spending outraged at the conditions of parking in the city and that the city moved a continuous base of income into the hands of private businesses outside this area. Then there is the issue of Schools, vanishing pension funds for the teachers, fire and police departments while the city and state budgets are out of control.
It's almost like old Rome just before NERO burned it he took everything from the people in order to rebuild the city in gold, then there was no more to take then he took the life of those who were the elite promising them that he was provide insurance for their family.
We need to get all of the cities in line with the people we are the employers and we need to have those who are involved in running things working for us, it's not only about the issue of Jobs but in order to have jobs you have to have industry and the industry has to be able to afford workers, if we continue on the pattern we are currently the cities will be almost in the same shape as it was in Germany during WWII. In fact we are almost in a parallel and can not see it.
Because I am on Radio and have been in contact with people of the world and those who are seeing what is evolving here its like Americans can not see what is happening before their eyes. And unless we take the same stand as we did within electing Mayor Harold Washington with passion and a decision to over come racial barriers, issues concerning religion, issues of economical divisions all of us here will feel the impact of food lines, loss homes, no schools because of budget constraints, more and more killings and hate crimes because of stressful living conditions which are plaguing the streets of this country. Its time to get involved get on board and move outside the box of partyisms please call me and lets walk in a path of bring first Chicago back and then each and every other state as Americans.
Blessing and Peace
